Today's new baths focus on custom showers
Forget about the whirlpool tub:

Take the bathtub (please!). It takes a long time for it to fill up and it's noisy. It uses 50 to 80 gallons of water per bath. Maintenance can be high, and it's hard to clean.

Debra Arvin, consultant for Jack Laurie Home Floor Designs, says it's no wonder that people who installed whirlpool tubs in the '80s and '90s now want a deluxe custom shower instead. They want custom showerheads, high-end finishes, and a bench to sit on and soft lighting. Her company designs bathrooms.

Arvin, quoted in The Wall Street Journal says remodelers want spa-like experiences in the comfort of their own homes. They're busy and can't wait for a tub to fill up.

While costs vary significantly, a base-level custom shower can cost from $3,000 to $5,000. A large and luxurious shower room can be in the $10,000 to $20,000 range.

Arvin says she talks to customers every week who are getting rid of their whirlpools or saunas, because...

Here's how to win the open house contest

Experts at BankRate.com say listing your home for sale is like entering a beauty pageant. The contestants are all the other for-sale homes in the area. The judges are potential buyers. The challenge begins at the open house.

If you've ever been to an open house held by a building contractor, you will remember being impressed by the clean, spacious feeling it offered. Keep that image in mind when you prepare your home for a showing.

You won't have all new furniture as the builder did, but you can still strive for the uncrowded, spacious feel that made you want to "move in now!"

Homeowners are used to seeing their miscellaneous items, and they don't realize...

Kitchen back splash adds color, style, protection

Many people think the counter back splash is mostly a decoration. In fact, it's needed to protect the walls from splashes of grease and cooking oil.

That doesn't mean that dramatic decorative materials and styles aren't pleasing to the eye. If your choice of back splash is mainly for esthetics, there is a world of colors, materials, tile sizes and tile shapes to choose from.

One popular choice is...

It's time for home sellers to get a few breaks, and here they are
The numbers are starting to add up for home sellers (and buyers).

Statistics show consumer confidence is on the rise and that could be good for the economy.

At the same time, low mortgage interest rates are making home ownership a reality for many people.

When you add up the factors that are in a seller's favor, it could finally be time to put up the "For Sale" sign.

If you plan to sell and buy another residence, this might be the very best time to do it. In some areas of the country, sellers are receiving multiple competing offers for their homes.

In some areas, you might get a little less for your home than you want, but you'll also pay less for your dream home.

Experts at wealthpilgrim.com give a comparison of trade-up home values. Say your current home is worth $250,000 and you want to buy one that costs $500,000. If you wait a few years to complete the deal, your present home might go for $25,000 more, but your new home will cost $50,000 more. And today's super-low interest rates might not be there when you trade up.

There are four key elements that go into a successful home sale:

Five basic steps to making a house your home
(ARA) - Owning a home remains a key element of the American Dream. In fact, a recent survey by TD Bank revealed that 84 percent of young renters (ages 18 to 34) intend to buy a home in the future. While it is exciting, home buying can be overwhelming and complicated if you don't have a general knowledge of the process.

Equipping yourself with the right tools will allow you to navigate the complexities of the home-buying process. Here are five helpful steps to follow on your way to home ownership.

My long-time partner and I want to buy a house together. What problems are involved? Is this a good idea?

Certainly it is a good idea, especially in today's favorable real estate climate.

When you decide to buy property together, your marital status doesn't have immediate implications. This changes if the relationship ends.
