Winter safety tips from Penske Truck Leasing: Remember the 3 P’s: Prepare, Protect, Prevent
Each year, Penske Truck Leasing offers winter driving tips to help drivers prepare for wintry weather.

If you are traveling during winter weather, Penske recommends the three Ps:

PREPARE your vehicle: Do a proper pre-trip inspection to make sure all systems are working properly. Clear snow and ice from all windows, hood and roof. Don’t forget the trailer.

Christmas tree fires can be
Home fires that start with Christmas trees create a very hot blaze that can spread through a room in seconds. They are more deadly than typical fires.

A National Fire Prevention Association study shows that one in 18 Christmas tree fires from 2005 to 2009 resulted in a death, compared with one in every 141 home fires overall. The US Fire Administration explains why it happens.

Trees provide an unusually large amount of fuel and can create a fire that can spread rapidly, leaving little time to get out of the house. They are especially deadly if they occur at night when people are sleeping.

While this type of fire is fairly unusual, it is far more serious than any other type of house fire.

The number of Christmas tree fires has dropped in recent years, mainly because of improved public education, and increased use of less-flammable artificial trees.

Many families still prefer a natural and traditional Christmas tree, and choosing one provides an annual family outing...

A public safety issue comes to light: many American adults can't swim
Swim clinics have added a new category of students to their classes: adult non-swimmers. The demand for adult swim classes has doubled in recent years.

It's mainly because 37 percent of American adults lack basic swimming skills. Many would like to learn so they can swim with their children on vacations, and, of course, so they could save themselves if they fall into a lake.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, adults, including those who can swim, make up more than 70 percent of drowning deaths in the United States each year.

Adults can miss out on learning to swim if they grew up in a culture where swimming isn't popular, or if they grew up in a metropolitan or rural area without easy pool access. Others are simply afraid of water, sometimes because their parents emphasized water dangers.

Teaching adults...

In a fire, have two ways to get out

When fire starts, your home could be engulfed in smoke and flames in just a few minutes.

That's why it's vital to have a working smoke alarm to warn you, and a preplanned fire escape method. The plan will prepare family members to think fast and get out quickly when the smoke alarm sounds.

But what if your escape route is blocked by smoke or flames?

Having two ways out is the answer...

Even King Arthur's knights wore hard hats
Today, hard hats are worn by workers in many types of jobs. They are also worn by football players, soldiers and bike riders. Whether for work or play, they have an essential role in safety.

It's not a new concept.

King Arthur's knights in shining armor wore metal helmets to protect their heads. Ancient drawings depict people in head-protecting hats in the ancient civilizations of China, Egypt, Greece and Rome.

The first protective hats made by...

Button batteries can be deadly for children

Batteries that are about the size of a shirt button are sending more than 5,000 kids a year to hospital emergency rooms. Swallowing the small battery can cause injuries varying from esophagus burns to fatal aorta damage.

The innocent-looking power sources are used in a multitude of devices including wristwatches, toys, cameras, hearing aids, remote controls and calculators. With so many uses, it's common to find an extra battery, or several, in your home.

Introduction of the 3-volt 20-milimeter lithium battery has caused more hospital visits. It's more powerful and can cause tissue damage much more quickly, say doctors at the Center for Injury Research and Policy at

Shocking truth: Bridges no shelter in tornados
In May 1999, under one Oklahoma overpass, an estimated 12 people tried to take shelter from a tornado.

Only one person died. Her body was found two weeks later buried under six feet of debris. The tornado plucked her from underneath the bridge, along with every last blade of grass from the embankments, and deposited it all in a ditch.

The others taking shelter suffered horrendous injuries: Compound fractures, missing fingers, ears and noses ripped off. Some were impaled by flying shingles and 2x4 boards.

Overall three people died in overpasses during that tornado; others were injured for life.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is trying to get the word out that highway bridges are never safe during tornadoes.
