Veterans Day: A time for appreciation
We all recognize the solemn moment of "the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month." We bow our heads in recognition of the end of World Wars I and II. Most of all, on Veterans Day, we remember and honor the veterans of all American wars and conflicts. We show our gratitude in many ways.
Some of us will attend parades, ceremonies or prayer services. Others will take time to remember family members and friends who served in past and present conflicts. Many of us will just clap a veteran on the back and say, "Hey, thanks veteran!" Young and old alike, you can clasp their hands and say, "Thank you for serving."
You won't have a hard time finding...

Get ready for the busiest shopping day of the year . . . Black Friday
The day after Thanksgiving Day will be marked by millions of shoppers and businesses as something worth celebrating. Some people like it as much as the holiday turkey.
Store sales are plentiful and prices are dramatically lowered on the 23rd.
Although Black Friday comes during what many have come to believe is a 4-day holiday, it's not. Most people have to work on Friday, unless they've taken the day off or their state has proclaimed a legal holiday. Mail delivery resumes.
Some major retailers open at midnight with a "midnight madness" tactic; some even earlier. They want to capture as many shoppers as possible before they run out of spending money. But that's not a problem...

Putting Down Some Roots
While you may think of the growing season as lasting from spring to the end of summer, the fall months are actually a great time for tree planting. The cooler weather gives newly planted trees a chance to establish roots during the dormant season before the next growing season begins. Once warmer weather and spring rains start, the tree will begin focusing on top growth.
To properly plant your tree, you should first take care to identify all underground utilities prior to digging your hole. A tree should be planted in a hole that is about three times the diameter of the root ball, but only as deep as the root ball. This gives the roots an easy way to push through the surrounding, loosened soil as its roots grow.
Be sure to plant...

Titanic pumpkins hit the fall festivals
The day of the Great Pumpkin has arrived. The growing of Brobdingnagian (gigantic) pumpkins has become a new phenomenon.
A giant pumpkin was once considered in the 75 pound range. In 2010, a 1,810.5 pound "gourd" made the Guinness World's Records as the heaviest pumpkin ever recorded.
This record was broken last October when a father and daughter team, Jim and Kelly Bryson, of Canada, produced one weighing in at 1,818.5 pounds.
How do you grow such a titanic pumpkin?

Celebrate National Tradesman Day on September 21
Celebrate National Tradesman Day
National Tradesmen Day, initiated by Irwin Tools (developer of the vice grip and other tools), aims to heighten awareness of the role of professional tradesmen. They are the central focus of this occasion.
Tradesmen contribute meaningfully to our lives in so many ways. As Irwin says, they are the ones who ...
* keep the world running when things break down;
* keep the water flowing every day;
* build us a place to call home;
* give our kids a place to learn;
* keep us warm in winter and cool in summer;
